A distress signal flashing across the Gulf of Mexico triggered a rapid rescue Saturday when a personal locator beacon activated roughly 30 miles offshore Naples, alerting watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Beach to a developing emergency. As the responding crew closed in on the beacon’s location, three red flares arced into the sky, followed by flashing lights that confirmed mariners were in immediate danger.
The Coast Guard boat crew arrived to find a vessel taking on water with two people aboard. Within moments, the boat capsized, leaving the mariners clinging to the overturned hull as waves pushed across the area. The crew quickly recovered both individuals and brought them aboard, transporting them safely back to Punta Rassa. Officials reported no medical concerns for either person following the rescue.
Despite the vessel’s condition, the owners declined commercial salvage, leaving the capsized craft adrift. Coast Guard personnel ensured the scene posed no immediate hazard before returning to shore.
